Species

Var Ghuul

The Var Ghuul are a warlike reptilian species from a tidally locked homeworld, once held under Na'dahkra rule. They climb cliffs, they sing, they prize honor, they distrust outsiders — and they carry the scars of domination into every negotiation. Their civilization is fractious and tribal, but their talent for war is among the most dangerous in the galaxy.

Society & Technology

Tribes and Rebellion

Var Ghuul society runs on clans, tribes, prestige, rank, rivalry, and martial obligation. They are less technologically refined than other interstellar powers, but they adapt fast, repurpose whatever they take, and turn plain construction into relentless military pressure. Their rebellion against Na'dahkra domination remains central to Var Ghuul politics, identity, and war planning.

Ships

Fleets

Var Ghuul ships are rugged, smaller, quick to produce, and often assembled from adapted or scavenged technology. They are not elegant — but they are numerous, aggressive, and built for boarding, assault, and prolonged conflict.

In play

Across the eight aspects

These labels describe strategic tendencies, not hard limits. A “Weak” aspect can still become powerful through technology, alliances, player choices, and species-specific abilities; a “Very Strong” aspect may still come with costs, bottlenecks, or narrow specialization.

  • Population· Very Strong

Large, fast-growing, and able to sustain expansion, conflict, and military demand.

  • Exploration· Neutral

Practical scouting focused on conquest, resources, routes, and targets.

  • Research· Weak

Utilitarian and military-focused; they adapt and repurpose more than they innovate.

  • Military· Very Strong

One of the galaxy's most fearsome direct-combat powers: numerous, fast, specialized, and aggressive.

  • Culture· Strong

Honor, song, tribe, loyalty, and martial identity create strong internal cohesion.

  • Economy· Neutral

Functional and militarized, capable of supporting war but not diverse or trade-dominant.

  • Construction· Weak

Sturdy and practical, especially for fortifications and military bases, but not refined or highly specialized.

  • Diplomacy· Neutral

Blunt, strength-oriented, and often intimidating, but capable of honor-bound agreements.

Exotic matter

Vibrational Quark-strings

Vibrational Quark-strings are the exotic matter associated with Var Ghuul Vibrational Networks, the resonant FTL infrastructure behind their harsh, physical approach to interstellar movement.

FTL

Vibrational Networks

Var Ghuul travel is physical, resonant, and harsh — less like clean navigation, more like striking spacetime until a path resonates open. Trade comes second to reach, war, and survival.

Trade

Var Ghuul trade is practical, suspicious, and shaped by survival. They value resources that support ships, weapons, fortifications, and clan independence. Their exchanges are often direct, honor-bound, and strategic — less about market complexity than securing what the clans need to remain free.

Planetary preferences

The Var Ghuul favor arid canyon worlds, cliff worlds, desert planets, rugged rocky planets, rift-valley worlds, silica-rich worlds, plateau worlds, and planets with strong acoustic geology or resonant mineral structures. Rocky badlands, sparse jungle ravines, asteroid settlements, marginal terrestrial worlds, low-water planets, and metal-rich industrial worlds are acceptable. Deep ocean worlds, high-pressure aquatic planets, frozen worlds with poor acoustics, and planets that impede their vibration/sound-based culture or rough industrial methods are poor fits.

Stellar preferences

The Var Ghuul can operate around most stable stellar types. Resonant binaries, rugged systems, and harsh frontier stars may be culturally or strategically favored, but they are not as selective as the Ko-tok or D'Kothi. Their large population and high expansion pressure let them make many harsh worlds work through numbers, toughness, scavenged technology, and militarized adaptation.

Special Win Conditions

  • Multiple Avenues of Rebellion

Find and unify lost Var Ghuul tribes and incite rebellion against external powers.

  • Destroy All Na'dahkra

Wipe out the former oppressors and their trade-route power.
